Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has contested Serge Aurier to produce the right-back spot his own following his display in the win over Crystal Palace.
The Ivory Coast international played his first match of the season – and making his first Premier League start since February – and provided two assists in Spurs’ joint win in their new stadium.
Aurier, who has recovered from a hand injury he said he wished to leave the club over the summer but seems to have a second opportunity – providing he is persistent.
“I believe he was really happy,” Pochettino said of this right-back. “We were really happy too. I believe the performance was fantastic.
“First half has been fantastic, his focus and attention.
“Now he needs to show and be consistent. It’s not 1 game and the second game intensity and the attention begin to drop. That is the secret in our team, not just him but all of the players.
“All the players will need to be constant and understand that every time we will compete we must give our best.
“Give just like a collective our best and for sure we have the quality to beat any team.”
Aurier is now in a struggle with Kyle Walker-Peters and Juan Foyth for its place that is right-back, not that he considers that himself according to a interview released this week.
He maintained there was”no competition” for his position in the team, but Pochettino hasn’t seen it.
“I did not see those quotations,” he explained. “No, I really did not see but you know, if when I speak with him it’s always clear. I didn’t see though.”
