The Chicago Cubs kicked off the 2018 MLB campaign after a hectic offseason which featured a flurry of free-agent signings, including Brandon Morrow pitchers Yu Darvish, and Steve Cishek amid high expectations.
But a year that started with such guarantee for the Cubs lives harms to Morrow Darvish, and third baseman Kris Bryant. Chicago’s dire situation was further complicated by late-season injuries to shortstop Addison Russell and outfielder Jason Heyward, and the team seemed to have little left in the tank as they stumbled through a 7-7 stretch run on home turf, capped by a 2-1 extra innings Wild Card loss to the Rockies at Wrigley Field to close out this year.
Though the Cubs remained silent throughout the offseason, with the departure of pitcher Jesse Chavez, along with the inclusion of veteran utility infielder Daniel Descalsco and hired gun Daniel Murphy indicating their moves, the team should enjoy an immediate advantage.
Darvish is reportedly set to make his return after making just eight appearances prior to seeing his 2018 season ended by knee operation, rejoining Jon Lester, Cole Hamels, Kyle Hendricks, and Jose Quintana in what’s arguably the most powerful spinning in the Majors.
