After expressing concerns regarding earning 112lbs throughout his from Julio Cesar Martinez five months 25, charlie Edwards has vacated his WBC flyweight title.
Martinez was announced the winner from knockout on the undercard of Vasiliiy Lomachenko-Luke Campbell on August 31, but replays showed the blow came later Edwards had taken a knee.
The result was so abbreviated as Edwards kept his crown and, although WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said moments afterwards thata direct rematch is going to be ordered, the Londoner has chosen to move up in fat.
At a letter to Sulaiman, Edwards wrote:It actually scared me how much I had been putting my health at stake and I cant risk causing harm to myself because health is the single most important thing in existence.
I am gutted because I appreciate being WBC world champion so pleased in order to maintain history as WBC flyweight world champion.
I want to continue to reflect the WBC and really, really wish to push on through the super flyweight rankings and persuade (sic) the super flyweight title.
But I wanted to let you understand first before anyone else that I shall be vacating the title to go up and struggle at the new weight.
Before outpointing Angel Moreno in March edwards, who has won 15 of the 17 competitions, became world champion with a decision win last year.
