Academic Review – Secondary

An Academic Review Day or Open Day is NOT just a day to collect mid-term results. Rather,
it is a platform for parents and guardians to get in touch with management staff and teachers
at schools for effective monitoring of the behaviour and performance of one’s child.
It creates a forum for teachers and parents to interact and find solutions concerning the
performance and conduct of pupils.
Although, parents have the right to meet administrators at any time of the school term, open
days provide them with the chance to chat with people tasked with the responsibility of caring
for their cherished children. Parents as partners of the school play an active role in the
education of their children. It is therefore imperative for them to participate in activities and
consultation related to the education of their children.
United States of America recognises the crucial role that parents have in their children’s
academic achievement and subsequently the drafting of the Family Engagement in Education
Act 2011 with the hope of closing the achievement gap. Also, according to Henderson, 1987
(in his work, The Evidence Continues to Grow: Parent Involvement Improves Student
Achievement) and Jenyes, 2003 (in A Meta-Analysis: The Effects of Parental Involvement on
Minority Children’s Academic Achievement), when parents are involved in their children’s
education, their children perform better academically and socially.
On the 18th of October, 2017, parents will be given the platform to interact with all the subject
teachers and get first hand information on the academic progress of their children. Parents
are advised to utilize this opportunity furnished by the school to actively participate in their
children’s education.
